The Camden Rescue Mission Inc., was founded in 1928. We just celebrated it's 81st year serving the city of Camden and the entire county. The Camden Rescue Mission Inc., is a 501 (3)(c), community based organization that at the beginning had a single mission which was to provide emergency overnight shelter, clothing and food for those in need. However, we have become more than that since 1989.
Camden Rescue Mission Inc., is a non-profit Christian organization. Independent non-denominational Mission serving the city of Camden and surrounding communities. The Mission has been in operation for the past "80 years". We provide a host of direct services to people and families in need through out South Jersey regardless of religion, denomination, national origin, sex, color or creed.
The Camden Rescue Mission was founded in January, 1928;
For the past 21 years the Rev. Al Stewart and his wife and host of volunteers have been serving the community of Camden and surrounding cities with shelter, food, clothing, furniture, counseling and training. Who would have thought that what Rev. Stewart a Pastor in Florida saw as a calling from God to help others would bring him to help the people of Camden. But help he has. It started first with just 2 meals and a cot for the homeless and as the years past and the needs grew in the community the Mission became a place of refuge a place to come and tell your problems and get answers or get them resolved. Families, in need of food because food has run out, burn-out victims who have lost everything in a fire and the Mission has helped in refurnishing their new apartment or home with used furniture that were donated top the Mission.
The Mission saw the need to grow in other areas such as counseling for families & children, counseling for abuse and drugs, food distributions, furniture distribution but it also saw a need to teach other entrepreneurship- "A way that they can help themselves" – We have a program to help people get ready for work, Upholstery classes, bible study classes, painting classes, and after school programs for children who’s parents work so they won’t be home alone. Holiday baskets for Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.
The Mission also saw a need in 1988 to start a annual Christmas party for less fortunate children and with Christmas only 3 weeks away when the Rev. announce the party the staff could not see it happening for all the children in the community but, Rev. Al did he had envision the children with gifts and he believed that God will supply the need and one week before with crayon and coloring books being wrapped for the give away which was all the Mission could afford a phone call came in and it was a man from Haddonfield and he and his family had collected 250 girl toys and 250 boy toys and wanted to know if the Mission could use them. Our 1st Miracle and all the children in the neighborhood received them and were thankful for their toys. Over the years the Mission has successfully given out 10,000 toys at Christmas time
